Confederation of African Football President Patrice Motsepe has stated that preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations are not on schedule. The event is planned to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
Motsepe is in Kenya to evaluate progress, meeting with senior officials such as Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and Football Kenya Federation president Hussein Mohammed. He recognized the setbacks but showed optimism they can be addressed.
"We're going to work together and those areas where we are falling behind we'll correct them, we'll fix them," Motsepe said.
Stadium construction delayed
A major undertaking is the new Talanta Sports Stadium in Kenya, which was expected to be completed already. Construction continues, with plans for it to hold games along with the current Kasarani Stadium. Kenya and Tanzania have both shown a desire to hold the opening match. Motsepe noted that his reference to a beginning in Tanzania did not confirm it would host the opening game.
The CAF president clearly dismissed any backup plans to relocate the tournament. "I want to emphasize that from a CAF perspective and for me personally as the president of CAF there is no plan B, there is no plan C," he stated. He intends to revisit Tanzania in January for a last review.
