In the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Team Nigeria has demonstrated strong leadership as they secure their place among top nations on Day Four. With ten medals-six gold and four silver-to their name so far, Nigeria sits fourth on the overall medal list.
The Nigerian team's remarkable performance is highlighted by a dominant presence in para powerlifting and weightlifting events. Stars such as Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, Riluwan Idris, Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema, and Rita Ferdinand have contributed significantly to the country’s haul of gold and silver medals.
In para powerlifting, athletes including Esther Nworgu and Folashade Oluwafemiayo struck gold, while Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema, and Rita Ferdinand added more silver. In weightlifting, Edidiong Umoafia set a Commonwealth Games record by lifting 319kg in the men’s 71kg category. Onome Omolola Didih further cemented Nigeria's place with a record-breaking performance in the women’s 53kg event.
Nigeria’s athletes successfully defended their titles and broke Commonwealth records, including Rafiatu Folashade Lawal who won her weightlifting title while setting new standards herself. Nigeria also clinched its fourth silver through Ruth Asuquo Nyong in the women’s 48kg weightlifting division, though it pales in comparison to their gold medals.
Hosting Scotland may have expected to be in a stronger position after four days, but it now finds itself ranked fifth with five gold, four silver and two bronze medals. Nigeria's gold medal stand has ensured that African rivals like South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, and Uganda all trail behind them on the tally of medals.
The impressive showings reflect diligent preparations and support from both Team Nigeria’s high-performance training camp in Aberdeen and the National Sports Commission’s renewed focus on athlete welfare. With more events to come, including athletics, wrestling, boxing, and weightlifting, Nigeria remains a formidable contender for one its best Commonwealth Games performances ever.
